The Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria has been submerged due to a landslide in India’s Tripura state, resulting in rising water levels in at least 25 nearby villages.
A temporary bridge on the Akhaura-Agartala road has collapsed, disrupting traffic flow. Heavy rainfall in the Akhaura area began on Tuesday night, and by Wednesday morning, water from India started flooding the canal adjacent to the port, affecting villages such as Bautla, Birchandrapur, Kalikapur, Bangerchar, and Saheb Nagar.
The sudden surge of water also caused the temporary bridge in the Gazir Bazar area on the Akhaura-Agartala road to collapse under pressure. Earlier on Tuesday, parts of the Haora River embankment were breached in the Khalapara area, leading to further flooding.
Local authorities, including Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ghazala Parveen Ruhi, have visited the affected areas. Md Jalal Uddin, chairman of Akhaura South Union Parishad, reported that the flooding occurred rapidly as water flowed in from India. Efforts are underway to repair the dam, and the Roads and Highways Department has been notified to address the collapsed bridge.
