Labour and Employment Adviser Asif Mahmud has announced the formation of a committee to reassess the funds allocated to the victims of the Rana Plaza collapse and the Tazreen Garments fire. The directive was given during a press briefing at the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon.
Asif Mahmud stated, “We will review the implementation of support provided to the families affected by the Rana Plaza and Tazreen Garments tragedies during the last Awami League tenure. An investigative committee will be formed to assess the situation and report their findings.”
He emphasized that a victim will be included in the investigation committee to ensure that the true situation is uncovered. If there are remaining funds, they will be used to support the victims.
During the briefing, some victims shared their harrowing experiences and highlighted various irregularities and corruption in the distribution of aid, assistance, and treatment. They also presented their demands to the adviser, who listened attentively.
Asif Mahmud acknowledged that even in the 21st century, Bangladeshi workers continue to face concerns regarding job security, working conditions, health risks, and even their lives. He pledged to work towards ensuring the rights of workers in a new Bangladesh, where their sacrifices would contribute to building a welfare state with humanitarian dignity.
