South Korea has announced plans to provide $10 million in humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh in 2024, more than tripling its previous year’s contribution. The South Korean embassy in Dhaka shared this information on Tuesday, highlighting the country’s ongoing commitment to supporting Rohingya refugees.
The aid will be channeled through international organizations operating in Bangladesh, including the UNHCR, International Organization for Migration (IOM), World Food Programme (WFP), and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Since 2017, South Korea has consistently contributed $3 to $5 million annually to assist Rohingyas and their host communities in Bangladesh, working closely with the Bangladesh government and international bodies.
Additionally, South Korea has donated 15,000 tons of rice, enough to sustain 1 million Rohingya refugees for 1.5 months, further boosting this year’s total humanitarian assistance. Over the past seven years, South Korea’s funding has supported various humanitarian efforts, including the provision of LPG, education, and food under the Joint Response Plan (JRP).
This year, South Korea has also introduced new funding to empower Rohingya women and youth through UNFPA, aiming to contribute to the successful implementation of the Joint Response Plan 2024 and provide essential humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
