A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for Awami League Joint General Secretary and former minister Dr. Dipu Moni and a five-day remand for former Deputy Sports Minister Arif Khan Joy in connection with the murder of a grocery store owner in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. The remand order was issued by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sultan Sohag Uddin after a hearing on Tuesday.
Mohammadpur Police Inspector Md. Tofazzal Hossain, the investigating officer, presented them in court and requested a 10-day remand. Dipu Moni was detained by detectives in Dhaka’s Baridhara DOHS area on Monday evening and was subsequently shown arrested in the Mohammadpur murder case that same night. She faces multiple cases in both Chandpur and Dhaka.
Arif Khan Joy was apprehended by the Detective Branch in Dhanmondi the same night and was also shown arrested in the same case. The case stems from an incident on July 19, during a protest in support of the quota reform movement in Mohammadpur’s Bosila area, where grocery store owner Abu Sayeed was fatally shot by police.
On August 13, SM Amir Hamza filed the murder case with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury’s court. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader are also named as accused in the case.
