Former BNP leader Mokarram Hossain Sujan, who won the chairmanship of Rangpur’s Gangachara Upazila Parishad, was removed from his position just an hour after being sworn in on Monday. After being prevented from taking office for three months due to a court injunction, Sujan finally took his oath at 11am, following a High Court directive in his favor. However, by 12pm, a government order that removed all 493 upazila chairmen across the country also ended Sujan’s brief tenure. Sujan had narrowly defeated the ruling Awami League’s candidate, Ruhul Amin, in the May 29 election, but a legal challenge delayed his swearing-in until August 14. Sujan was expelled from the BNP for defying party orders to participate in the upazila election.
