Bangladesh Bank (BB) has imposed a restriction limiting daily cash withdrawals to Tk3 lakh per account for security reasons. The directive was communicated to the managing directors (MDs) and chief executive officers (CEOs) of banks via SMS on Saturday night, and will remain in effect until further notice.
While cash withdrawals are capped at Tk3 lakh, customers are still permitted to transfer larger amounts to other accounts or conduct digital transactions without any restrictions.
This decision comes in response to an increase in cash withdrawal pressure, particularly from pro-Awami League politicians and business families, following the change of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5. The central bank aims to discourage large cash withdrawals to prevent the potential misuse of funds for illegal or terrorist activities.
Earlier, on August 10, BB had set a cash withdrawal limit of Tk2 lakh, following a previous limit of Tk1 lakh on August 8.
