Shaikh Ashhabul Yamin, a young man and student, tragically lost his life during the violent clashes between police and protesters in Savar on July 18, 2023. A video that circulated widely on social media captured the horrifying moment when Yamin was thrown from a police APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) onto the highway, where he was left severely injured and later died.
The clashes erupted during protests demanding quota reforms in government jobs. Yamin, a fourth-year Computer Science and Engineering student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Dhaka, had joined the protest. Despite being gravely injured, Yamin was dragged and discarded on the road by police officers, treated with shocking brutality.
The tragic incident occurred after Yamin was shot in the chest and fell onto the APC. Although he was still alive, police officers violently threw him onto the highway, where he was left unattended. It wasn’t until an hour later that residents took him to Enam Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Yamin’s death, the first among students during the quota reform protests, shocked the nation and highlighted the extreme violence faced by demonstrators. His father, Md Mohiuddin, expressed deep sorrow but chose not to seek justice, leaving the matter in the hands of Allah. The tragedy of Yamin’s death serves as a grim reminder of the need for justice and reform in Bangladesh.
