Dhaka University students staged a protest on Friday in solidarity with the ongoing demonstrations in Kolkata following the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Medical College. The protest, held under the banner “Awaaz Tolo Nari” (Raise Your Voice, Women), took place at the Raju Sculpture on the university campus.
The tragic incident, which occurred on August 9, involved the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The brutality of the crime has sparked widespread protests across India, with demonstrators demanding justice for the victim.
At the Dhaka University protest, students condemned the destruction of evidence in Kolkata and criticized the lack of justice in similar cases within Bangladesh. They expressed frustration over the issues of police and judicial accountability in both countries, drawing parallels with Bangladesh’s own struggles, such as the infamous Tonu rape case in the Comilla Cantonment area.
Aleya Tahmim, an Anthropology student, highlighted the irony of such incidents occurring in highly secured areas, questioning the military’s responsibility and accountability.
Protesters carried placards with messages like “Kolkata to Bangladesh, We Want Justice” and “The Only Punishment for Rapists is the Death Penalty.” They called for an end to impunity for rapists and demanded stronger legal protections for women.
