The United States has denied any involvement in the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from power, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. Addressing rumors during a press briefing, she stated, “Any reports or rumors that the United States government was involved in these events are simply false. That is not true.”
Jean-Pierre emphasized that the future of Bangladesh’s government should be determined by the Bangladeshi people, asserting, “This is a choice for and by the Bangladeshi people.”
Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 amid widespread protests and subsequently fled to India. There were speculations that she had accused the U.S. of instigating the uprising due to her refusal to allow Washington access to Bangladesh’s Saint Martin’s Island as a military base. However, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, denied that Hasina made any such comments after leaving Bangladesh.
The press secretary also noted that the U.S. continues to monitor the situation in Bangladesh, highlighting the president’s consistent stance on human rights issues, both publicly and privately.
