The United Nations has urged the government of Bangladesh to ensure the protection of quota reform protesters from any threats or violence.
On Tuesday, the UN emphasized the need for extra protection for peaceful protesters, particularly young people, children, and individuals with disabilities.
“It is a fundamental human right to be able to demonstrate peacefully, and governments should protect those rights,” stated Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, during a regular briefing in New York, US.
Responding to inquiries, Dujarric affirmed that the UN is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh with concern.
“I think whether it’s in Bangladesh or anywhere else in the world, people have a right to demonstrate peacefully,” he reiterated.
