In light of Ashura observances, quota reform protesters have decided not to hold any programs on Wednesday, as announced by Nahid Islam, a coordinator of the Anti-discriminatory Students Movement, on Tuesday night.
“We won’t hold any procession on Wednesday due to Holy Ashura,” Nahid stated, emphasizing a temporary halt in their activities.
The next steps will be determined after consultations with other coordinators, he added. Additionally, Nahid urged Dhaka University students to maintain vigilance in their dormitories and take charge of their halls, defying potential disturbances from Chhatra League members.
Ashura, a day of mourning commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), will be observed across Bangladesh on Wednesday with solemn religious observances.
Earlier on Tuesday, protesting students gathered at Central Shaheed Minar as part of their scheduled program, responding to recent alleged assaults by Chhatra League members and reiterating demands for quota reforms.
They maintained their position until 8pm at the Shaheed Minar area, concluding their activities for the day there.
In contrast, Chhatra League leaders and activists occupied positions at Raju Sculpture and TSC areas armed with sticks, iron rods, and helmets from 2pm onwards.
Tuesday’s clashes between Chhatra League and quota reform protesters resulted in six fatalities across Dhaka, Chittagong, and Rangpur, with two casualties reported in Dhaka, three in Chittagong, and one in Rangpur.
