Chhatra League activists reportedly picked up a student and attacked others during a protest rally demanding the cancellation of the quota system in government jobs in Jessore on Monday.
The student allegedly picked up by the Chhatra League activists is named Masum.
Students from Jashore Science and Technology University (JUST) began the protest rally from Palbari at 12 pm, demanding quota reform in government jobs. The rally marched through key roads and gathered in front of the deputy commissioner’s office, joined by students from Government MM College.
Earlier, protesters had assembled in front of the Jessore Press Club on Mujib Road.
During the sit-in, quota reform movement organizer Rashed Khan alleged: “Chhatra League activists attacked the Government MM College rally. They arrived on motorcycles, beat up students with helmets, and snatched their banners. A student named Masum was picked up at that time.”
Jessore Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Razzak initially did not respond to phone calls. He later returned the call, explaining he had been in an important meeting before hanging up.
The protesters stated: “We are demonstrating against the prime minister’s irrational statements and demanding reforms in all types of quotas. Merit must be prioritized in all sectors, including schools, colleges, and jobs. However, the government is not giving this issue the importance it deserves. We will not leave the streets until our demands are met.”
