On Friday, students of Rajshahi University blocked the railway near the Station Bazar area, demanding reform of the quota system for government jobs and justice for the attacks on protesters that occurred on Thursday. The blockade began around 5 pm, cutting off rail communication with the rest of the country.
The protests follow clashes between police and quota reform protesters that left at least 30 people, including three policemen and journalists, injured in Dhaka, Comilla, and Chittagong on Thursday. Students and job seekers have been demonstrating across the country for some time, calling for changes to the quota system.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court issued a four-week status quo on Wednesday regarding the quota issue, instructing protesters to return to their classes and attend their exams. However, the protesters expressed disappointment and rejected the order, vowing to stay on the streets until their demands are met.
