Gopalganj’s traditional bronze jewellery has been officially recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, marking the second product from the district to receive this prestigious status.
Deputy Commissioner Kazi Mahbubul Alam confirmed that the Department of Patents, Industrial Designs, and Trademarks under the Ministry of Industries published the journal on Thursday, in line with Section 12 of the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 2013. This official registration is expected to boost the global promotion of Gopalganj’s bronze jewellery, particularly from Jalirpar in Muksudpur upazila.
“We believe this recognition will enhance employment opportunities and improve the living standards of artisans involved in bronze jewellery making. The bronze industry will become more dynamic, leading to an overall improvement in the socio-economic conditions of the area,” added Alam.
On March 12, the district administration applied for GI recognition for the bronze jewellery of Jalirpar. Subhash Baidya, a businessman and former member of Ward No 7 of Jalirpar Union, highlighted the century-old tradition of bronze jewellery in the village, which has gained national and international fame despite facing competition from imported bronze jewellery.
Jalirpar’s bronze jewellery industry continues to sustain hundreds of families, with 45 shops still operating in the Jalirpar Bronze Market. This new GI status follows the earlier recognition of Rosogolla as Gopalganj’s first GI product.
