State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibbur Rahman announced on Saturday that approximately 2 million people across 15 districts have been affected by the ongoing floods caused by torrential rains and upstream water flow.
The worst-hit districts include Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Rangpur, Jamalpur, Gaibandha, Feni, Rangamati, Bogra, Kurigram, Sirajganj, Lalmonirhat, and Cox’s Bazar. The minister provided this update during a press briefing at the Secretariat.
The government has allocated substantial resources to aid the affected areas, including 8,700 tons of rice, Tk3.10 crore in cash, 58,500 sacks of dry food, Tk60 lakh for baby food, and Tk60 lakh for fodder.
Approximately 36,223 people have taken refuge in shelters. While no fatalities have been reported, the flood has significantly impacted the livelihoods and homes of 2 million people.
The minister noted that the southern part of the country might experience flooding soon. Additionally, there is a possibility of another flood spell in August or September, and preparations are underway per the prime minister’s directives.
To address reports of food shortages in certain areas, the minister assured that all necessary items have been provided to parliament members, deputy commissioners, and upazila nirbahi officers as requested. He emphasized that there should be no lack of relief.
The minister is scheduled to visit flood-affected areas in Tangail and Sirajganj on Sunday.
