A landslide early Wednesday at the Rohingya camp in Balukhali, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, claimed the lives of two individuals, including a child. Ukhiya police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shamim Hossain confirmed the incident, noting that the identities of the deceased have not yet been determined.
He added that several others were reported injured and police are actively working on the situation. This incident follows a previous landslide on June 19, which resulted in ten fatalities in Ukhiya’s Rohingya camp due to heavy rain.
Md Rafiq of Ukhiya’s Kutupalong Rohingya Camp highlighted the precarious living conditions, stating, “Most of the Rohingyas live in the foothills of the camp. As a result, heavy rains are causing loss of life. The Rohingyas are living at risk. If the heavy rains continue like this, there is a risk of further loss of life in the camp unless these residents are moved to safe places.”
