The Dhaka Bypass Expressway, a crucial infrastructure project designed to link Bangladesh’s national highways, is anticipated to be operational by July 2025.
Recent updates reveal that over 65% of the construction is already complete. Once finished, the 48-kilometer expressway will enable seamless travel from Joydebpur to Madanpur, bypassing Dhaka. This project is set to become the most technologically advanced road in the country.
The update was shared on Thursday during Media Public Day at the CCULB Resort and Convention Hall in Gazipur’s Mirer Bazar area. Media representatives toured various ongoing construction sites, including the K-12 Railway Overpass (Mirer Bazar Flyover) and footpaths.
Discussions were held between the Chinese Enterprises Association in Bangladesh (CEAB) and media representatives from China and Bangladesh about mutual interests.
Implemented under the Roads and Highways Department’s (RHD) first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project, the consortium leading the project includes Sichuan Road and Bridge (Group) Corporation Limited (SRBG), Shamim Enterprise Limited (SEL), and UDC Construction Limited (UDC), with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) serving as the financial advisor.
The Joydebpur-Debgram-Bhulta-Madanpur Road (Dhaka Bypass) PPP project involves upgrading the previous two-lane road into a four-lane expressway, along with two service lanes for local traffic. This upgrade will reduce travel time along the route from two hours to just half an hour.
The project, estimated to cost Tk3.5 billion, is expected to be open for traffic by July 2025. It will allow buses, trucks, and other vehicles to travel from the northern and western regions to the southern and eastern regions of the country without entering Dhaka city.
During Media Day, Xiao Zhimin, CEO of Dhaka Bypass Expressway Development Company Limited (DBEDC), stated that the expressway will enhance Bangladesh’s highway network, providing a safe and comfortable travel experience, reducing congestion, and significantly contributing to local economic development.
Xiao highlighted that the project is listed as a practical cooperation project for the third Belt and Road Forum for international cooperation, showcasing high-quality collaboration between China and Bangladesh.
At the event, CEAB Vice President Yang Jianxi emphasized the importance of cooperation between China and Bangladesh under the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Bangladesh-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor. He assured that member companies would continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields, contributing to Bangladesh’s socio-economic development and ensuring mutual benefits.
