Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been advised to have a pacemaker implanted, following a recommendation from a medical board.
Currently, Khaleda Zia is receiving treatment in the coronary care unit (CCU) at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
A medical board doctor revealed that the decision was made during a meeting on Saturday night, which included both domestic and foreign physicians. Another meeting of the medical board is scheduled for Sunday.
Dr. ZM Jahid Hossain, Khaleda Zia’s personal physician, confirmed that her condition remains stable.
Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital early Friday morning due to a deterioration in her health. The 79-year-old leader suffers from multiple health issues, including arthritis, heart disease, respiratory problems, liver and kidney issues, and diabetes.
Previously, Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital on August 9, 2023, and received CCU treatment for two days.
On October 27, 2023, she underwent successful pacemaker surgery due to cirrhosis of the liver. After stabilizing, she returned home after more than five months of hospitalization.
Khaleda Zia was arrested on February 8, 2018, in two corruption cases, leading to over two years of imprisonment. Her sentence for the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases was stayed on March 25, 2020, and has been extended every six months since then.
