Matiur Rahman, president of the National Board of Revenue’s (NBR) Customs, Excise, and VAT Appellate Tribunal, has been reassigned to the Internal Resources Division (IRD) of the Ministry of Finance amid controversy over his wealth.
The ministry announced the transfer on Sunday, though the notification did not specify the reasons for the decision.
The notification stated, “The order issued in public interest will come into effect immediately.”
Matiur Rahman garnered attention on social media during Eid-ul-Azha after rumors circulated that his son had bought a goat for an astonishing Tk15 lakh. The exorbitant price of the goat sparked widespread curiosity and controversy.
Rahman refuted the claims, stating, “Iffat, the person being talked about, is neither my son nor even a relative or acquaintance. My only son’s name is Toufiqur Rahman. I will formally protest these rumours.”
Following the incident, scrutiny intensified on Matiur Rahman and his family’s lifestyle. Several media reports indicated that Rahman and his family own resorts, shooting spots, bungalow houses, land, and other properties.
