Misinformation about Russell’s Viper has recently spread on social media, causing unnecessary panic in Bangladesh.
Contrary to popular belief, Russell’s Viper, though highly venomous and responsible for many snakebite incidents in India, is not the most venomous snake and is considered less aggressive.
To address public concerns, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change has issued guidelines for safety and welfare.
Safety Guidelines to Prevent Snakebites
To reduce the risk of snake bites, follow these precautions:
- Exercise caution in snake-prone areas: Be vigilant when walking or driving in areas where Russell’s Vipers are known to inhabit.
- Avoid tall grass and bushes: Do not reach into holes or move through tall grass without visibility.
- Wear protective clothing: Use boots and long pants in affected areas.
- Use lighting at night: Carry a flashlight when moving around at night.
- Maintain clean surroundings: Keep your surroundings clean to avoid attracting snakes.
- Handle fallen debris with care: Be careful when removing fallen trees, firewood, and straw.
- Do not confront snakes: If you encounter a snake, do not try to catch or kill it. Call the National Helpline at 333 or notify the nearest Forest Department office.
Immediate Actions After a Snakebite
In the event of a snake bite, take these steps:
- Minimize movement: Keep the bitten limb still to prevent venom spread.
- Clean the wound: Gently wash the bite area with soap or wipe with a wet cloth.
- Remove restrictive items: Take off watches, jewelry, or tight clothing near the bite site.
- Avoid harmful interventions: Do not prick, needle, or apply substances to the bite.
- Seek medical help: Go to the nearest hospital or healthcare center immediately. Russell’s viper antivenom is available free of charge at government hospitals.
- Stay calm: Do not panic; antivenom is readily available.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Samanta Lal Sen assures that the country has sufficient antivenom supplies, and hospitals are stocked adequately.
Measures to Control Russell’s Viper Population
Protecting natural predators like mongoose, monitor lizards, forest cats, eagles, and cranes is crucial for controlling the Russell’s Viper population. The environment ministry urges the public to avoid killing these animals or destroying their habitats to maintain ecological balance.
