The 12th National Parliament of Bangladesh will convene its third session on Wednesday, marking the first budget session under the current Awami League government, which assumed office following the January 7 election this year.
The session is set to begin at 5pm.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin called the session on May 20, using his authority under Article 72 (1) of the Constitution.
Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali is slated to present the national budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25) on Wednesday afternoon. This will be the first budget of the Awami League’s current term, their fourth consecutive tenure since the January 7, 2024, election.
According to a finance ministry official, the proposed budget is expected to be approximately Tk8,00,000 crore, with a focus on controlling rising inflation.
The FY25 budget will be the 53rd in the country’s history and the 25th presented by the Awami League government across its six tenures post-independence.
Tajuddin Ahmed, as finance minister, presented Bangladesh’s first budget in 1971 under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The initial budget was Tk7.86 billion with an ADP size of Tk5.01 billion.
