State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mohibur Rahman announced that Cyclone Remal has caused a loss of Tk6,880 crore across 20 districts in Bangladesh.
During a press briefing at the Secretariat on Sunday afternoon, the state minister provided these details following an inter-ministerial meeting on the overall impact of Cyclone Remal.
Rahman stated, “I have received the loss account of 20 districts. A loss of Tk6,880 crore has been incurred. On May 26, Cyclone Remal hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh, flooding several coastal areas. This resulted in significant submergence, with 16 people losing their lives. Several roads, embankments, houses, and social institutions were damaged.”
The state minister emphasized that various disaster preparedness activities had been conducted in recent days. “We coordinated pre-disaster activities with all government departments and are now continuing post-disaster efforts. The day after Cyclone Remal hit, I personally contacted MPs of the coastal districts to inquire about the local people.”
Regarding relief efforts, Rahman reported that Tk5.75 crore in cash, 5,500 tons of rice, 9,000 packets of dry food, 200 bundles of cotton wool, Tk2.45 crore for cattle food, and Tk2.45 crore for baby food have been distributed in 19 districts. Additionally, recent floods in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Dinajpur prompted further aid:
- In Sylhet: Tk20 lakh in cash, 500 tons of rice, Tk10 lakh for cow fodder, and Tk10 lakh for baby food.
- In Sunamganj: Tk15 lakh in cash, Tk5 lakh for cow fodder, and Tk5 lakh for baby food.
- In Dinajpur: Tk15 lakh in cash and Tk3 lakh for dry and other food.
