River erosion in Bogra’s Sariakandi upazila has sharply increased as the Jamuna River’s water level rises due to continuous rainfall and upstream water flow. The escalating erosion is causing alarm among residents of low-lying areas, exacerbated by the river’s strong current.
Officials from the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) have pledged swift action to mitigate the erosion. Over the past 24 hours, the Jamuna River’s water level rose by 60 cm, currently flowing 4.83 cm below the danger mark. This rise has triggered erosion from Rouhadah to Ichamara in Kamalpur Union.
In the Titur Mor area of Kamalpur Union, 50 meters of land have already collapsed. Locals report that CC blocks and sand-laden geo bags have been swept away. If the erosion continues unabated, approximately 500 families in Kamalpur village risk being stranded due to potential breaches in the flood control embankment.
Nazmul Haque, the executive engineer of Bogra BWDB, noted that the Jamuna River’s water level is increasing because of heavy upstream rainfall. “By monitoring Sunday’s water levels, we can better predict the duration of the rise. Riverbank protection work is ongoing in erosion-affected areas in Kamalpur Union, and we will implement measures to prevent further rapid erosion in new areas,” he stated.
