The Roads and Highways Department has prohibited the establishment of 217 temporary cattle markets along highways for Eid-ul-Azha this year to prevent severe traffic jams and ensure safe travel for passengers. This decision was announced during a meeting led by Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader at the BRTA building on Thursday.
Key measures include:
- Prioritizing the crossing of vehicles transporting sacrificial animals.
- Keeping electronic toll collection (ETC) booths open 24/7 at toll plazas.
- Requiring vehicles carrying sacrificial animals to display banners in front.
The meeting emphasized the importance of:
- Round-the-clock toll collection at major bridges such as Karnaphuli, Meghna, Gomti, Payra, Khan Jahan Ali (Rupsa), Charsindur, Shaheed Moyezuddin, and Atrai Toll Plaza.
- Keeping ETC booths at Padma Bridge, Bangabandhu Bridge, and Karnaphuli Tunnel operational 24/7.
- Completing repairs on national highways and roads damaged by Cyclone Remal at least seven days before Eid.
- Monitoring and addressing potential traffic congestion spots, with special attention to 155 identified locations across the country.
These measures aim to facilitate smooth travel and avoid disruptions during the festive period.
