The aftermath of Cyclone Remal, which made landfall in Bangladesh’s coastal regions on Sunday night, has resulted in 10 fatalities and significant property damage, reported State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibbur Rahman. Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, he revealed that 150,457 houses were damaged, with 35,483 of them completely destroyed across 107 unions and 914 municipalities.
The deceased include three individuals each from Bhola and Barisal, and one each from Satkhira, Khulna, Chittagong, and Patuakhali. A total of 19 districts were affected by the storm, including Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jhalakathi, Barishal, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Barguna, Bhola, Feni, Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Narail, Gopalganj, Shariatpur, and Jessore.
The government opened 9,424 shelters in the coastal districts, providing refuge to over 800,000 people and housing 52,146 domestic animals. The state minister credited the minimal damage to the comprehensive preparations made following the prime minister’s directives.
Medical support is being provided by 1,471 teams, of which 1,400 are active. Financial assistance of Tk 6.85 crore has been allocated to the affected, including Tk 3.85 crore, 5,500 tons of rice, 5,000 dry food packets, Tk 1.50 crore for baby food, and Tk 1.50 crore for animal fodder distributed across 15 districts.
The Prime Minister’s Office is in contact regarding a potential visit to the affected areas, with further details to be announced. Cyclone Remal weakened to a land depression over Bangladesh on Monday, as per the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
