On Sunday morning, a trawler carrying more passengers than its capacity capsized in the Mongla River in Bagerhat, with many passengers feared missing. Although most managed to swim to shore, the exact number of missing passengers remains unclear. Local authorities, including divers, the Coast Guard, and fire service personnel, launched immediate search and rescue operations. Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nishat Tamanna stated that CCTV footage is being reviewed to ascertain the situation. The incident coincides with the intensification of Cyclone Remal, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to issue great danger signal no. 10 for several coastal districts, including Bagerhat. The cyclone, now a severe storm, is expected to make landfall on Sunday, impacting Bangladesh and India’s West Bengal.
