Police recovered the hanging body of a Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (Ruet) student from a rented house in Rajshahi’s Sadhurmor area on Saturday.
Professor Dr. Kamruzzaman Ripon, Director of Student Welfare at Ruet, confirmed the incident.
The deceased, Sauvik Mallick, 21, was a second-year student in the Computer Science Engineering (CSE) department and hailed from Magura.
Prof. Dr. Kamruzzaman Ripon reported that other students, noticing Sauvik’s room door was locked from the inside and receiving no response to their calls, contacted the police. Upon arrival, police broke the door and found Sauvik hanging from the ceiling fan.
Sauvik was quickly taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor, added Prof. Dr. Kamruzzaman Ripon.
“Initially, we believe that Sauvik committed suicide. I spoke to his roommates to understand the situation. They mentioned that Sauvik had been depressed for some time, but the exact cause of his depression is still unknown,” he stated.
Humayun Kabir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalia police station, said Sauvik’s body is currently in the hospital morgue. His family in Magura has been informed and the body will be handed over to them through the proper legal process once they arrive in Rajshahi, added the OC.
