In a groundbreaking revelation, Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) has uncovered fresh gas reservoirs at Well No-8 within Sylhet’s Kailashtila Gas Field.
Confirmation of this discovery came from officials of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) following extensive excavation efforts.
This recent find marks the fourth gas strike in Sylhet over the past seven months, a fact confirmed by SGFL Managing Director, Mizanur Rahman.
Since January last year, Bapex has been diligently excavating Well No-8 of the Kailashtila Gas Field, yielding gas deposits between depths of 3,440 to 3,455 feet. Presently, an experimental extraction process yields 21 million cubic feet of gas daily.
Rahman is optimistic, projecting full-scale operations within the next three months. As per estimates from gas field sources, by 2025, SGFL’s gas extraction is anticipated to soar to 250 million cubic feet annually.
SGFL has been steadfast in its exploration and drilling endeavors in Sylhet, with ongoing efforts since the previous year. The excavation of Kailashtila Well No-8 commenced in early 2023, a project costing approximately TK150 crore.
Currently, Sylhet Gasfield Limited contributes 100 million cubic feet of gas to the national grid. Prior to this discovery, on January 27, a substantial gas layer was unearthed at Well No. 2 of Rashidpur under SGFL’s jurisdiction, estimated at around 157 billion cubic feet.
