The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has granted a feasibility study to CdNet Communications Ltd for the development of the Bangladesh International Submarine Cable, Bagha-1, aimed at boosting reliable internet connectivity across Bangladesh.
The Bagha-1 subsea cable is set to significantly enhance internet capacity and quality in both urban and rural areas, ensuring high-speed and secure internet connectivity nationwide.
Florida-based APTelecom LLC will conduct the feasibility study, which will assess options and determine the best strategy for deploying the subsea cable system. The agreement was signed during the sixth Indo-Pacific Business Forum in Manila.
USTDA Director Enoh T Ebong emphasized the agency’s regional strategy, stating, “Across the Indo-Pacific, USTDA is building a portfolio of subsea cable projects with partners like CdNet who are committed to expanding their countries’ broadband capacity through trusted subsea fibre optic cable systems.”
CdNet Director Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat highlighted Bagha-1’s potential: “Bagha-1 would help bolster Bangladesh’s reliable and trusted connectivity to the world and unlock opportunities for emerging digital services, including 5G services, international data centres, and international hyperscalers.”
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas underscored the study’s importance, saying, “USTDA’s feasibility study will lay the groundwork for improved internet access and quality for the people of Bangladesh.”
The Bagha-1 project is a significant step towards enhancing Bangladesh’s digital infrastructure, promising advanced digital services and improved global connectivity.
