Babar Ali has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Bangladeshi to summit Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain in the world, just two days after conquering Mount Everest.
Ali’s accomplishment of climbing two eight-thousand-meter peaks in a single expedition was announced by his mountaineering club, Vertical Dreamers, through a Facebook post. He reached the summit of Lhotse at 6:05am Bangladesh time.
A native of Chittagong, Babar Ali previously became the sixth Bangladeshi to conquer Mount Everest, reaching the peak at 8:45am on Sunday and proudly raising Bangladesh’s red and green flag.
Babar, known for his adventurous pursuits, is also a medical doctor. He is the second son of Liakat Ali and Lutfunnahar Begum from Burishchar, Hathazari, Chittagong. He completed his MBBS as part of the 51st batch at Chittagong Medical College.
Despite working as a public health officer, Babar left the job due to being denied leave for a previous expedition. He previously served as a medical officer at Emerging Infections at icddr,b and at IOM – UN Migration.
Babar’s expedition to Everest began on April 1, with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla on April 4. He reached Everest Base Camp on April 10. Starting from base camp on April 14, he ascended to Camp-2 at 21,300 feet. After spending two nights there, he reached Camp-3 on May 18 and Camp-4 on May 19, entering the “Death Zone” at 26,000 feet. On the morning of May 18, Babar summited Everest, marking a significant achievement for Bangladesh.
