Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud revealed on Thursday that India has shown keen interest in financing Bangladesh’s Teesta project. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, Mahmud emphasized the importance of aligning the project with Bangladesh’s needs.
Mahmud also confirmed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s forthcoming visit to New Delhi, stating that it will occur once the Indian elections conclude and a new government is formed.
Diplomatic sources hint at an early July visit by Prime Minister Hasina to India, post-election. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected re-election reinforces the historically close ties between the two countries.
Mahmud addressed border killings, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ending such incidents. Discussions also touched upon enhancing people-to-people connectivity, including cooperation on importing hydropower from Nepal and Bhutan through India and easing the visa process for enhanced mobility.
