A significant setback occurred on Wednesday as the High Court intervened, halting the leasing process for the establishment of a cattle market at Aftabnagar in the capital. Additionally, the court issued a rule, demanding the government justify why the existing makeshift cattle market in the area shouldn’t be deemed illegal.
The HC bench, comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque, took this action following a writ petition challenging the leasing notice for the proposed market.
With this legal intervention, plans for a cattle market at Aftabnagar ahead of Eid-ul-Azha this year have been dashed, according to lawyers representing the petitioners.
Senior Advocate Shah Manjurul Haque and Advocate SM Shamim Hossain represented the petitioners, while Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta represented the state.
The controversy arose after the chief estate officer of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) issued a lease notice on April 4, announcing plans for 11 makeshift cattle markets across the capital for Eid-ul-Azha.
The President and General Secretary of Aftabnagar Zahurul Islam City Society, Alamgir Hossain Dhali, and Gias Uddin Kajal, respectively, filed the writ petition challenging the legality of the proposed Aftabnagar cattle market.
