A devastating nor’wester unleashed havoc along Chattogram’s Anwara and Banshkhali coasts, causing 16 salt-laden trawlers to capsize and leaving 72 individuals unaccounted for in the turbulent waters of the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday.
Amidst adverse weather conditions, Gahira Baro Auliya River Police in-charge, Titu Dutta, reported the disappearance of numerous individuals across different coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal from morning until noon.
Promptly responding to the distress calls, the Coast Guard and River Police initiated extensive rescue operations, managing to salvage four trawlers and rescue 30 individuals from the treacherous waters.
Recounting the harrowing ordeal, Faruq, the boatman of the Baro Auliya trawler, described how their vessel succumbed to the ferocious storm during its journey from Kutubdia, resulting in its overturning and subsequent sinking, along with several other trawlers.
Despite the calamity, Faruq and his fellow crew members were fortunate to reach the safety of the coastline through swimming. However, the tragic incident incurred substantial losses due to the sinking of the trawlers.
