Bangladesh has enlisted the expertise of Indian law firm Mason & Associates to safeguard the Geographical Indication (GI) rights of Tangail saris. Specializing in Intellectual Property (IP) Law, the firm will advise on legal strategies to preserve the authenticity of this cherished cultural heritage.
This development was revealed by the Ministry of Industry in a statement submitted to the High Court, presided over by Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar. Alongside this, a comprehensive list of hundreds of GI products from various regions of Bangladesh was presented to the court.
The legal skirmish ensued after India staked claim to the centuries-old Tangail sari, asserting it as a GI product originating from West Bengal. In response, Bangladesh officially recognized the Tangail Sari as a GI product of Bangladesh on February 8, following heightened debate and criticism.
Barrister Sarowat Siraj Shukla, hailing from Tangail and petitioner of the case filed on February 18, represented the writ in court proceedings on Monday.
