In a significant milestone, registrations for the Universal Pension Scheme surpassed the 100,000 mark on Monday, spanning over eight months since its inception. The National Pension Authority (NPA) confirmed this achievement, revealing that approximately Tk52 crores have been deposited into government funds through participation in four schemes.
Launched on August 17, 2023, by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Universal Pension Scheme marked Bangladesh’s entry into a new era of comprehensive pension coverage for citizens aged 18 and above. Under this initiative, individuals will receive lifelong pension benefits upon reaching 60 years of age.
The scheme debuted with four primary schemes: Probash, Progoti, Surakka, and Samata, as outlined in a press release by the NPA. Among these, “Probash” caters to expatriate Bangladeshi citizens, allowing participation by paying the prescribed contribution rate in foreign currency.
Following its inauguration, the scheme garnered 12,889 subscribers in its first month, with fluctuations observed in subsequent months. However, registration numbers have steadily increased from the sixth month onwards, signaling a growing uptake of the pension scheme among the populace. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving initiative.
