As the heatwave grips Bangladesh, temperatures soared above 40°C in a staggering 17 regions on Monday, surpassing previous records and intensifying the nationwide heatwave. Dhaka alone witnessed a spike in maximum temperature, reaching 40.3°C, indicative of the relentless heatwave’s impact.
While the scorching conditions persist, there’s a glimmer of relief on the horizon as the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecasts rain across various parts of the country, excluding Sylhet, expected around May 2 or 3.
Chuadanga, registering the highest temperature nationwide at a blistering 43°C, leads the list of regions experiencing extreme heat. Other areas enduring temperatures above 40°C include Ishwardi, Rajshahi, Baghabari, Koira, Faridpur, Mongla, Khulna, Tangail, Kumarkhali, Badalgachi, Bogra, Aricha, Gopalganj, and Satkhira.
Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana noted the unprecedented nature of this heatwave, highlighting its intensity compared to previous years.
According to the BMD’s weather bulletin, very severe heatwaves are sweeping across Jessore and Rajshahi districts, with severe heatwaves affecting parts of Khulna division, Tangail, Faridpur, Gopalgonj, Naogaon, Pabna, and Nilphamari districts. Mild to moderate heatwaves prevail in Barisal division, parts of Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Rangpur divisions, along with Mymensingh, Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, and Bandarban districts.
