Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun distributed registration certificates for 14 Geographical Indication (GI) products, including the renowned Tangail Sari, during a ceremony held on Thursday.
The minister presented the certificates to the proponents of these products at an event organized by the Department of Patents, Designs & Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industries at the Foreign Service Academy in the city.
Highlighting the significance of preserving the heritage of Tangail Sari, Minister Humayun affirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to upholding its status through adherence to legal procedures.
He emphasized that Tangail Sari would remain a distinct product of Bangladesh, secured with the GI tag obtained through rigorous legal protocols.
The minister also noted that with the addition of these 14 products, the total number of certified items now stands at 31, underscoring the rich cultural heritage and historical significance associated with these products.
“These products, both those granted GI certificates today and those awaiting certification, carry centuries-old traditions, some dating back thousands of years. Their unique characteristics make them irreplaceable, as they have been an integral part of our heritage for generations,” Minister Humayun remarked.
