After an extended holiday prompted by the relentless heatwave, high schools and colleges are gearing up to resume classes next Sunday, as announced in a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Education.
To ensure the safety of students amidst the extreme weather conditions, the ministry has outlined several preventive measures. Daily assemblies will remain suspended until the heatwave subsides, and outdoor activities requiring sun exposure will be limited.
Moreover, educational institutions will operate on Saturdays starting from May 4 to address learning deficits and align with the new curriculum objectives, as stated in the notice.
Professor Shahedul Khabir Chowdhury, Director of Administration and Colleges at the Department of Secondary and Higher Education, emphasized that the decision to reopen schools and colleges was made considering the fluctuating temperatures across the country. He noted that while the current temperatures are high, they are not unprecedented for Bangladesh.
Originally scheduled to reopen on April 21 after Eid holidays, the reopening was postponed until April 27 due to the sweltering heatwave affecting the entire nation.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the ongoing heatwave is expected to persist for 72 hours, starting Thursday morning, with Jessore recording the highest temperature of 42.4°C. The alert is set to conclude on Sunday morning.
