Brazilian Ambassador Paulo Fernando Dias Feres has highlighted the urgency of resolving the Rohingya crisis, warning that the situation could deteriorate further if left unresolved.
Speaking at the DCAB Talk organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB), Ambassador Feres emphasized the need for Rohingya refugees to return to Myanmar once conditions permit.
During the event chaired by DCAB President Nurul Islam Hasib, Ambassador Feres underscored the importance of keeping the Rohingya issue on the international agenda, urging continued attention and support from the global community.
He stressed the significance of repatriation as the ultimate solution to the crisis, acknowledging the challenges faced by Bangladesh in hosting over 1.1 million Rohingya refugees, including the birth of thousands of babies annually in the camps.
Ambassador Feres commended Bangladesh for its efforts in providing assistance to Rohingya refugees, emphasizing that such actions enhance the country’s standing on the global stage.
In addition to discussing the Rohingya crisis, Ambassador Feres addressed questions regarding the Indo-Pacific strategy pursued by the US and China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). While refraining from taking a firm stance, he emphasized the importance of monitoring developments in the region and expressed hope for peaceful resolutions to potential conflicts between major powers.
As geopolitical tensions continue to evolve, Ambassador Feres emphasized the need for diplomacy and cooperation to mitigate the risk of confrontation between the US and China, highlighting the complexities and challenges facing both nations.
