In a significant development, the High Court has called for a comprehensive list of Rohingya individuals enlisted as voters in Cox’s Bazar.
Following a directive from a bench led by Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque on Wednesday, the deputy commissioner of Cox’s Bazar district and other relevant authorities have been instructed to furnish the requested list to the court by June 6.
Moreover, the court has issued orders for the immediate removal of 38 Rohingyas from the voter list of Eidgaon union in Cox’s Bazar.
The legal proceedings stem from a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Md Siddik Ullah Mia on behalf of local voter Md Hamidur Rahman. The petition, lodged on Tuesday, sought judicial intervention to disclose the number of Rohingyas registered as voters in Cox’s Bazar. It also demanded their exclusion from the voter registry and called for a temporary halt to polling activities in Eidgaon union until the list undergoes thorough revision.
According to Lawyer Md Siddik Ullah Mia, the inclusion of 38 Rohingyas in the voter list of Eidgaon union resulted in their acquisition of National Identification (NID) cards of Bangladesh.
