Exciting news emerges from Ambarnagar village in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali as Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) embarks on the excavation of a new gas reserve.
Named the Begumganj-4 (West) Evaluation and Development Well Digging Project, this venture signals a significant step forward in energy exploration efforts.
Over two hundred engineers and workers have mobilized for the drilling operations, which commenced Monday morning and are slated to continue for the next four months.
Md Asaduzzaman, overseeing the drilling work, revealed that the drilling rig was officially installed Monday afternoon, with an initial target set at 3,200 meters underground.
Anticipated gas reserves span four zones, each potentially yielding 10 million cubic feet of gas per day upon successful extraction, subsequently contributing to the national grid via Bakhrabad.
Asaduzzaman underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering local energy exploration to fuel economic and industrial growth, citing it as a pivotal aspect of national development.
The government’s ambitious agenda includes drilling 46 new exploration, development, and workover wells by 2025, reflecting a concerted effort to enhance energy security and meet consumer demands.
Bapex’s history in the region dates back to 1976 when the first well was discovered in Begumganj, followed by a second in 1978. While initial drilling proved futile, a breakthrough came in 2013 with the discovery of a productive well, now contributing eight million cubic feet of gas daily to the national grid following successful workover operations in 2018.
