Prepare for potential changes in train fares as the government considers withdrawing distance-based concessions for passengers, likely resulting in increased ticket prices.
According to a circular from Bangladesh Railway, this decision is slated to take effect from May 4, marking a significant shift in the railway fare structure.
The circular highlights the history of concessions, dating back to 1992 when distance-based and section-based rebates were introduced. While the section-based rebate was discontinued in 2012, the distance-based concession remained in place until now.
Passengers currently enjoy discounts of 20% for distances between 101-150km, 25% for 151-400km, and 30% for journeys exceeding 400km. However, with the proposed withdrawal of these concessions, commuters may face higher fares.
Although Director General of Bangladesh Railway Sardar Shahadat Ali previously hinted at a fare increase on March 16, Railway Minister Zillul Hakim later denied plans for such adjustments. Nevertheless, passengers should anticipate potential fare adjustments due to the removal of concession facilities.
