Bangladesh is reeling under the grip of a very severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels, surpassing 40°C in various regions.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s bulletin, Pabna, Jessore, and Chuadanga districts are experiencing a very severe heatwave, while Dhaka and parts of Khulna divisions and Rajshahi district are grappling with severe heatwave conditions.
The mercury soared to a staggering 42.2°C in Chuadanga, marking the country’s highest temperature, while Dhaka recorded a scorching 38.2°C (as of 3 pm), informed meteorologist Shahinul Islam.
Tragically, two individuals succumbed to heat stroke in Chuadanga and Pabna districts on Saturday amidst the relentless heatwave.
The capital, Dhaka, witnessed its hottest day of the season at 40.4°C, while Jashore recorded a blistering 42.6°C, setting a new high for the country.
With the heatwave showing no signs of relenting, the Meteorological Department issued a five-day warning starting from Saturday, cautioning citizens to brace for the intense conditions.
According to BMD’s categorization, temperatures exceeding 42°C are classified as very severe heatwaves, while ranges between 40-41.9°C and 38-39.9°C are termed severe and moderate heatwaves, respectively.
The scorching temperatures have prompted authorities to shut down all educational institutions until April 27, with Dhaka University opting for online classes to mitigate the impact of the blistering heat.
While rain or thunder showers are forecasted for select regions, the rest of the country is expected to experience mainly dry weather with temporary cloud cover.
Mild to moderate heatwaves persist in Barisal division and parts of Rajshahi division, along with certain districts, indicating the enduring discomfort caused by the prolonged heatwave.
As temperatures continue to soar, citizens are urged to take necessary precautions to cope with the sweltering conditions.
