As temperatures soar across Bangladesh, Dhaka, the bustling capital city, experienced scorching heat on Saturday, registering a maximum temperature of 40.4°C. This marked a significant rise of 2°C compared to the previous day, exacerbating the discomfort for city dwellers.
The heatwave gripping most parts of the country has intensified, with Jessore recording the highest temperature of the season at 42.6°C, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). Met Office sources indicate no immediate relief, forecasting sustained high temperatures for the next two days.
Since the beginning of April, mild to moderate heatwaves have been observed in various regions, interspersed with brief rain showers on April 7 and 8, offering temporary respite. However, the onset of a severe heatwave from April 15 has led to worsening conditions, with several areas experiencing very intense heat on Saturday.
In addition to Jessore, Chuadanga is also grappling with a severe heatwave, prompting a three-day heat alert issued by the government on Friday. As a precautionary measure, all primary, secondary schools, colleges, and madrassas will remain closed from April 21 to April 27, aiming to safeguard students from the blistering heatwave sweeping the country.
According to the BMD weather forecast, Khulna division, Rajshahi, Pabna, and Tangail districts are currently facing severe heatwave conditions expected to persist for the next five days. Meanwhile, Barisal division, along with the rest of Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions, and Chandpur and Moulvibazar districts, are experiencing mild to moderate heatwaves with the likelihood of continuation.
As residents grapple with the relentless heat, authorities urge caution and recommend staying indoors as much as possible to mitigate the effects of the scorching temperatures.
