Shib Narayan Das, a revered freedom fighter and one of the original architects behind Bangladesh’s first national flag, passed away at 9:30 am on Friday while receiving treatment in the ICU of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
The news was confirmed by his son, Arnab Aditya Das, as the nation bids farewell to a symbol of its liberation struggle.
Born in Comilla, Shib Narayan’s journey intertwined with the tumultuous events of Bangladesh’s quest for independence. His father, Satish Chandra Das, fell victim to the atrocities of the Pakistani army during the 1971 Liberation War.
A dedicated activist and leader, Shib Narayan played an active role in various movements, including the historic language movement and the education movement of 1962. His contributions extended to his involvement in student politics and leadership within the Chhatra League.
His pivotal role in designing the national flag, alongside other student leaders, remains etched in the annals of Bangladesh’s history. The iconic flag, with its yellow map of Bengal centered within a red sun on a green backdrop, was a testament to the nation’s aspirations.
Under the guidance of Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Shib Narayan’s sketch of the map within the red circle laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s enduring symbol of unity and pride.
As the nation mourns the loss of this visionary, condolences pour in from across the political spectrum, with leaders expressing deep sorrow at Shib Narayan’s passing and extending sympathies to his bereaved family.
Shib Narayan Das may have left this world, but his legacy as a freedom fighter and the architect of Bangladesh’s cherished national emblem will continue to inspire generations to come.
