Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque disclosed that approximately 8,000 individuals have been eliminated from the list of freedom fighters due to discrepancies in their claims.
Speaking to journalists after paying respects at the Mujibnagar Memorial ahead of the Mujibnagar Day rally in Meherpur, Minister Mozammel emphasized the importance of accuracy in compiling the list of liberation war veterans. He highlighted the presence of verification committees at the upazila level nationwide to oversee the authentication process.
Verified cases are forwarded to the National Freedom Fighter Council for final approval, and the resulting Freedom Fighters Gazette is published. Any individual found to have falsely obtained freedom fighter status has it revoked upon complaint or detection, supported by evidence.
Mozammel underscored the ministry’s vigilance against fraudulent claims, stating that there is no room for deception in becoming a freedom fighter. He assured thorough investigations into specific allegations.
Regarding the historical significance of the Mujibnagar government, Mozammel elaborated on plans to transform Mujibnagar into a world-class tourist destination under the prime minister’s leadership. Stakeholder consultations have been conducted, and an initial project proposal formulated.
The Minister announced that the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) would soon review the project for approval, with work expected to commence promptly thereafter. The goal is to inaugurate the rejuvenated Mujibnagar as an international tourist hub by the next April 17.
