A recent incident at an Incepta Pharmaceuticals factory in Dhaka’s Dhamrai, involving the leakage of nitric acid, has sparked concerns among experts over potential health hazards.
Reportedly, on April 11, a drum containing nitric acid fell at the factory premises, emitting heavy smoke. While the Fire Service promptly responded, containing the situation, experts stress that nitric acid poses significant risks if it spreads in the air.
Professor Md Arju Mia from Jahangirnagar University’s Department of Chemistry explained that condensed nitric acid can inflict severe damage on the human body, including burns. Inhalation of acid fumes, especially for asthma patients, can exacerbate health issues, necessitating immediate medical attention.
Authorities reassured the public of the situation’s containment, with the Dhamrai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) confirming no ongoing risks. However, the incident underscores the potential dangers associated with chemical spills, prompting a swift response from emergency services and factory personnel.
Faizur Rashid, assistant administrative officer at Incepta Pharmaceuticals, clarified that the incident occurred due to a drum mishap, swiftly addressed by the fire service without exacerbating the situation.
Sohail Rana, station officer of Dhamrai Fire Service Station, emphasized their cautious approach in handling the chemical spill, avoiding water usage to prevent further complications.
While immediate measures have been taken to mitigate risks, the incident highlights the importance of stringent safety protocols in handling hazardous materials to safeguard both human health and the environment.
