In observance of Eid-ul-Fitr, a significant religious festival for Muslims, the Dhaka Metro Rail service will be temporarily suspended for two days.
As Eid falls on Thursday and is followed by Friday, the city’s modern public transport system will remain closed for the duration of these two days.
The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) had earlier announced the suspension of metro rail services for Eid, a decision made prior to the commencement of Ramadan.
DMTCL highlighted that although the metro rail operates with its own staff, the available workforce is insufficient to meet operational demands during Eid. Keeping the service operational would require the majority of employees to forego their holiday celebrations.
Moreover, it’s anticipated that the demand for metro rail services will be lower on Eid day, particularly until the afternoon.
During Ramadan, the metro rail has witnessed an average daily ridership of 246,000 passengers, indicating a slight decrease from the pre-Ramadan figure of 295,000. However, passenger numbers have surged following the extension of metro rail service hours by one hour from the 16th day of Ramadan, with an average of 290,000 passengers recorded in the past five days.
