BGMEA President SM Mannan revealed on Wednesday that 100% of factories under the organization have successfully disbursed salaries and bonuses ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, despite facing significant challenges within the apparel industry.
Addressing reporters at a press conference held at the BGMEA Uttara office, Mannan highlighted the critical juncture confronting the apparel sector, citing a drastic rise in production costs over the past five years coupled with soaring bank interest rates ranging from 13 to 14%.
Mannan emphasized the predicament faced by factory owners, pointing out a staggering 56% increase in wages since January, exacerbating financial strains amidst declining product prices, which have plummeted by 6 to 18%.
The prevailing circumstances have compelled factories to accept orders at discounted rates merely to sustain operations, creating a precarious situation exacerbated by the necessity to adhere to new wage structures for Eid bonuses.
Despite the adversities, Mannan commended the resilience of entrepreneurs who have made personal sacrifices to ensure timely salary and bonus disbursements, underscoring the industry’s commitment to its workforce.
Expressing concerns over non-member garment factories, Mannan urged the government to extend special support to these entities to avert potential disruptions, emphasizing the proactive measures taken by BGMEA to monitor and address labor-related issues across Bangladesh.
A comprehensive monitoring initiative involving 22 teams comprising 50 personnel each was deployed, resulting in the resolution of labor grievances identified in 25 factories. Ensuring equitable treatment, every worker received their entitled salary and Eid bonus, reaffirming BGMEA’s dedication to upholding labor rights within the industry.
