In a historic turn of events, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has successfully reclaimed 91 bighas of land along the Jagdal and Beurajhari borders in Ranishankail upazila, Thakurgaon district, after seven decades under Indian jurisdiction.
Commander Lt Col Tanjir Ahmed of BGB’s 50th Battalion in Thakurgaon officially announced the achievement on Tuesday, commemorating the territorial restoration with the hoisting of a white flag.
The retrieval follows a series of diplomatic and procedural engagements between Bangladesh and India, initiated by BGB’s formal request for a land survey.
Lt Col Tanjir elaborated, “This accomplishment stems from our meticulous identification of certain areas along the Jagdal and Beurajhari borders rightfully belonging to Bangladesh. A joint BGB and BSF survey validated our claim, resulting in the return of these lands to Bangladesh.”
The local community along the borders rejoices at the repatriation of the 91 bighas, now duly recorded in the government’s official land documents (khas khatian).
The recovered land comprises approximately 15 bighas in the Jagdal BOP area and 76 bighas in the Beurajhari BOP area. Notably, 77 bighas are arable, including 11 bighas of tea gardens and three bighas of river chars.
The conclusive joint survey, conducted on March 6 and 7 by officials from Bangladesh Land Record and Survey Department and their Indian counterparts, not only reaffirmed the 91 bighas for Bangladesh but also recognized 23.5 bighas of land in India’s favor, marking a significant milestone in bilateral territorial resolution.
